The International Centre for Research on the Environment and the Economy (ICRE8) is a non-for-profit, private, Research Centre dedicated to interdisciplinary research on the Environment, Energy, Economy, Eco-innovations and their electronic versions (hence E8). The overarching goal of the Centre is to promote the understanding and implementation of Sustainable Development, as the only non-self-destructive path of socio-economic development.
Central to ICRE8's mission is the pursuit of excellence in conducting and presenting research and a commitment to explore relevant environmental, natural resources and energy issues, for a variety of circumstances and stakeholders and across different temporal and spatial scales. The Centre’s research expertise includes financial analysis, socio-economic and econometric analysis, environmental valuation, political and institutional analysis, integrated environmental-economic modeling, cost-benefits analysis, multi-criteria analysis, life cycle analysis, risk analysis, geographical information systems, multi-stakeholder mediations techniques, game theory, information technologies and decision making tools development.
Prof. Dr. Phoebe Koundouri is the Founder and Scientific Director of ICRE8. The ICRE8 Strategic Planning Board is the strategic decision maker of the Centre. Seats on the board are given to institutions and foundations, private partners and world recognized thinkers on issues relevant to the interaction of society-economy-natural resources. At the moment the members of the Strategic Planning Board are: Dr. Oliver Adler (Global Head of Economics & Real Estate, Private Bank & Asset Management Research, Credit Suisse AG), Professor Ian Bateman, OBE (Director, SCERGE), Professor Graciela Chichilnisky (Columbia University), Professor Sir Partha Dasgupta (Frank Ramsey Professor Emeritus of Economics, University of Cambridge), Professor Christian Gollier (Director, Toulouse School of Economics - TSE), Professor Kristis Hassapis (Associate Professor, Department of Economics, University of Cyprus), Professor Phoebe Koundouri (ICRE8, AUEB, LSE), Professor Anil Markandya (Distinguished Ikerbasque Professor & Former Scientific Director, BC3), Dr. Angelos Tsichrintzis (Attorney-at-law).

ICRE8‘s core research group consists of 36 researchers and is complimented by 41 associated researchers in Greece, Europe, the USA, and Asia and Australia. In addition, a big number of research students and internships also support the research at ICRE8.
ICRE8 is reinforcing the Research Team on Socio-Economic and Environmental Sustainability (ReSEES) work with an exceptionally successful record of attracting funding for long and short run research projects: eleven research projects over less than two years of operation, six of them Horizon 2020 projects.
ICRE8 is hosting the Greek chapter of the United Nations Sustainable Development Solutions Network (UN SDSN-Greece), together with the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA) Political Economy of Sustainable Development Lab, and will be organizing two major conferences in 2017, the Mediterranean UN SDSN annual conference and the 23rd Annual Conference of the European Association of Environmental and Resource Economists (EAERE 2017).
With SDSN Greece, the Political Economy of Sustainable Development Lab (PESD) of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA), the Research Team on Socio-Economic and Environmental Sustainability (ReSEES) of the Athens University of Economics and Business (AUEB) and Athena Research and Innovation Center, ICRE8 forms a cluster of cutting-edge research institutes that produce one of the most powerful cutting-edge research centers in Europe.
