New H2020 funding to ICRE8 for the OpenAIRE project

ICRE8 has been granted funding for the H2020 (EINFRA-2016-1) OpenAIRE project - CONNECTing scientific results in support of Open Science.

The main concept behind OpenAIRE-Connect is to realize, operate, and leverage the uptake of two new services that build on and extend the existing OpenAIRE technical and networking infrastructure, to stimulate a technical and cultural shift towards a scholarly communication ecosystem supporting more effective/transparent evaluation and reproducibility of research results.

Using both OpenAIRE-Connect’s services (the Dashboard explicitly, the Broker implicitly) as well as Zenodo (with its community and research artefacts functionalities) ICRE8 will build an Open Science directory of the SDSN-Greece research publications, data and related models (linked to funding), with potential uptake by SDSN-Med. This would be a pilot for the global SDSN (Sustainable Solutions Network of the United Nations).

The UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN), set up in 2012, promotes practical problem solving for sustainable development, including the design and implementation of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), adopted in 2015 by the United Nations. Following the adoption of the SDGs, SDSN is now committed to supporting the implementation of the SDGs at local, national, and global scales. In an effort to overcome the compartmentalization of technical and policy work by promoting integrated approaches to the challenges facing the world, SDSN Greece, through ICRE8, is embarking on the creation of an electronic database (e-library) through national funding that will aggregate the complete body of research work that relates to the SDGs in Greece and beyond. Available in the English language, the e-library will also give visibility to research work undertaken in Greek that is currently not easily accessible or searchable.

Currently, ICRE8 is gathering information on completed and on-going research projects of Greek institutions that are relevant to the three thematic priorities of SDSN Greece (Natural Capital Valuation; Ecosystems, Water and Biodiversity; Sustainable Development in Times of Crisis; Climate Change: Mitigation and Adaptation Policies) and the 17 SDGs, research and data spanning of the last 20 years. The aim is to make this information accessible to interested stakeholders through tools that will help them analyse and create indices on social, economic and environmental issues. In the short-run, it will be investigated how this e-library can be integrated into OpenAIRE-Connect reaching a wider audience. This initiative could act as a pilot for all national and regional SDSN hubs, in the long run. The aim is for the e-library to expand and include all SDSN related research, worldwide, with OpenAIRE-Connect acting as the international hosting platform. Therefore, OpenAIRE-Connect will assist greatly in publishing datasets, scientific methods and indices to a wide range of actors (public authorities, general public, policy makers etc.) that due to accessibility restrictions neglect robust scientific results and methods.

An Integrated Approach for Sustainable Environmental and Socio-Economic Development Using Offshore Infrastructure

Prof. Phoebe Koundouri (AUEB, ICRE8, LSE), Amerissa Giannouli and Ioannis Souliotis have contributed “Chapter 3: An Integrated Approach for Sustainable Environmental and Socio-Economic Development Using Offshore Infrastructure” (pages 44-64) to the recently published book “Handbook of Research on Green Economic Development Initiatives and Strategies” (2016), edited by M. Mustafa Erdoğdu, Thankom Arun and Imran Habib Ahmad. IGI Global.

Seas and oceans offer a vast renewable energy resource and production possibilities with great potential for innovation and growth. Multi-purpose offshore platforms are ocean energy and aquaculture synergies developed in order to achieve efficient use of marine space. Regarding the construction and operation of such infrastructures, environmental and socio-economic benefits should be taken into account. This chapter uses the Ecosystem Services approach and the total economic framework for evaluating different designs of multi-purpose offshore platforms and a participatory approach to ensure their public acceptability.

SIMRA website and social media have been launched!

ICRE8 is a partner in the project "Social Innovation in Marginalised Rural Areas" (SIMRA), founded by the European Union's Horizon 2020 research and innovative programme. SIMRA seeks to advance understanding of social innovation and innovative governance in agriculture, forestry and rural development, and how to boost them, particularly in marginalised rural areas across Europe, with a focus on the Mediterranean region (including non-EU) where there is limited evidence of outcomes and supporting conditions.

ICRE8’s general role in the project is the implementation of sustainable management in agriculture, forestry and rural development taking into account stakeholders’ views and economic theory. The sustainable management of natural resources aims at a development than meets the need of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. Under this approach, we need to secure economic, social and environmental sustainability. Natural resources are public goods and their value is not reflected in the markets. For this reason we need to investigate non-market valuation methods in order to evaluate the different SIs aspects (economic and environmental) as well as monetize SIs impacts for the society. In addition, it is important for the social acceptance of SI actions to take into account the different stakeholders views at the valuation process.

"Deep Uncertainty and Climate Change Economics" - Weekly ICRE8 seminar by Professor Nikitas Pittis @ ATHENA RC

Professor Nikitas Pittis is holding a weekly ICRE8 seminar series on “Deep Uncertainty and Climate Change Economics”, every Thursday at ATHENA RC, Maroussi.

Uncertainty is present everywhere. If this assertion is true for science in general, it is especially true for the economic and policy science related to climate change. These uncertainties arise from both the underlying science of climate (and the extreme complexity of the climate system), and our inability to perfectly capture the way our socio-economic system would respond, mitigate and adapt to climate change. Even if climate scientists have recently made a lot of progress in understanding and describing the mechanisms at play in the climate change phenomenon, many uncertainties still remain.

This seminar series addresses these questions by surveying the recent decision theoretic literature, while remaining in the context of climate change economics. The objective is to question the way the evaluation of climate change policies should be realized in the presence of risk and deep uncertainty.

If you wish to attend the “Deep Uncertainty” seminar please contact us: info@icre8.eu

Read the Sustainability Journal Special Issue edited by Prof. Phoebe Koundouri

Prof. Dr. Phoebe Koundouri is the guest editor of the Sustainability Journal Special Issue "Sustainable Management of Marine Resources under Uncertainty: Economic, Environmental and Social Aspects".

Estimates of global oceanic economic activity’s value range between 3-6 trillion (USD)/year. Such activity includes a wide range of ocean-related industries, which contribute to both current and future economic development. In fact, offshore activities are expected to be intensified in the near future. In this context, the single most important challenge will be the development of an integrated framework of analysis for assessing the environmental, economic (including financial), and social sustainability aspects of offshore activities.

This Special Issue aims at building the needed integrated framework of analysis. Given the aforementioned three compounding levels of uncertainty, this is a challenge!

Eight open access papers have been published:

Participatory Design of Multi-Use Platforms at Sea

Our new article "Participatory Design of Multi-Use Platforms at Sea" has been published in Sustainability.

European oceans are subject to rapid development. New activities such as aquaculture and ocean energy have gained importance. This triggers interest in “multi-use platforms at sea” (MUPS), i.e., areas at sea in which different activities are combined. MUPS are complex features with regards to technology, governance, and financial, socioeconomic, and environmental aspects. To identify realistic and sustainable solutions and designs for MUPS, the MERMAID project applied a participatory design process (PDP) involving a range of stakeholders representing companies, authorities, researchers, and NGOs. This paper evaluates if and how the participatory design process contributed to the design of multi-use platforms. It is based on interviews with the managers of the case study sites and a questionnaire administered to all stakeholders participating in the PDP workshops. Analyzing the four case studies, we conclude that the participatory design process has had a valuable contribution to the development of the four different designs of MUPS, even though the preconditions for carrying out a participatory design process differed between sites. In all four cases, the process has been beneficial in generating new and shared knowledge. It brought new design issues to the table and increased knowledge and understanding among the different stakeholders.

Journal Ecosystem Services, Special Issue on: Marine economics and policy related to ecosystem services: Lessons from the world's regional seas

The Special Issue has been published and contains fifteen papers. One of the papers is written by ICRE8 researchers and Scientific Director, and has the title: 'Valuing climate change mitigation: A choice experiment on a coastal and marine ecosystem'. The paper estimates the willingness to pay for mitigation measures against natural hazards caused by climate change, on coastal and marine environments in Northern Spain. The specific natural hazards examined are (a) sea-level rise, high tides and extreme wave events that lead to floods and beach erosion, and (b) rise in sea temperature that leads to invasive jelly fish outbreaks and changes in native biodiversity. The authors employ a choice experiment to elicit the value the local population places on improvements, through the implementation of appropriate mitigation measures, in biodiversity, recreational opportunities and on decreases in health risks associated with jellyfish outbreaks. Results suggest that people value positively benefits interms of increased biodiversity and recreation opportunities, as well as health risk reductions, and this points to some interesting policy implications.
